New Greenkeeper – Huge Impact…

Jack has not been with us long, but has already made a huge impact!  A massive thanks from everyone at the club for your outstanding start and to Chris and Ollie for all their continued hard work!

The course is receiving huge praise from visiting players and lovely to see that those pesky Magpies pecking the greens for chafer larvae will be moving elsewhere for their free lunch at some point in the near future.  Jack has been treating the greens with nematodes, microscopic organisms that attack the developing chafer larvae.  Environmentally friendly, the nematodes are totally harmless to earthworms etc but deadly to the larvae.

So our beautiful greens are going to stay just that - beautiful!

Captain’s Day – Saturday 26th August

PRINCES RISBOROUGH GOLF CLUB

AL’s CAPTAIN’S DAY - SATURDAY 26th AUGUST 2023

Dear All,

I am excited to give you details of my Captain’s Day which this year is being held on SATURDAY 26th AUGUST.  Firstly, I want to take this opportunity to give a big thankyou to the Club Management and their teams, and your Committee, for the support they have all given me over this year.

I would request that you register asap for planning purposes, by entering your name on the Sign In sheets in the changing rooms OR contact me directly either by email – albert.bowyer@btinternet.com – or telephone 07807 776461.

It is important that when you register you also let me know how many additional family and friends will be attending the lunch and fun social get together after so that we are able to properly manage the ‘après-golf’.

Please feel free to contact me with any comments or queries you may have either by email, telephone or when you see me at the club.

I am very much looking forward to us all having a fun and enjoyable day and sincerely hope you and yours are able to support it.

What's it all about?

  1. Objectives
    * To celebrate the Captain’s year in a fun and enjoyable way with a round of golf and after with a social gathering of the golfers, friends, and family.
    * To include as much as is possible all sections of the club including men, women, seniors, juniors, Bruce, and management in the day. This can also include selected guests.
    * To raise a little more funds for the Captain’s Charity – the MS Society
  2. Golf
    * The golf will be a team four-ball, better ball Stableford prize competition, together with individual prize Stableford competitions for men and ladies.
    * If you have chosen your own group to make up your four-ball, or elements of it, please advise at the time of registering to play. Alternatively registered players will be allocated to a suitable team.
    * All men will play off yellow tees and ladies off red tees.
    * A current HI will be required for all players.
    * The men are playing for the Captain’s Trophy, which is a Club Board competition open to all men with an active HI.
    * Shotgun start at 09.00
    * Prizes will be sponsored by the Captain and others as appropriate.
    * For 7-day members there is no cost for the golf.
    * For 5-day members there is a reduced green fee charge. I do want many 5-day members to play and so if you do want to join us, please talk to me first regarding the green fee.  The club have offered a package of 5 weekend games for just £50 ie just £10 per round compared to a £38 green fee.
    * For guest golfers there will be a full green fee to pay.
  3. Food & Drink
    * Coffee on arrival, and refreshments ‘on the course’.
    * There is a buffet meal after the golf for all players, friends, and families.
  4. Cost
    * As mentioned above there is no cost for the golf (apart from green fees) or prizes.
    * For the food and refreshments, a small contribution of £10 per head is required and this should be paid in advance please by BACS to: Mr A P Bowyer, HSBC, 40-23-26, 61040502
    * Drinks as normal will be available to purchase from the bar.
    * It is also intended to run a ‘half-way house’ for coffee, etc available free to all golfers.
  1. Other Competitions, etc on the day
    * Depending on circumstances there will be some other competitions, and these will be detailed on the day.
  1. Charity Fund Raising – for the MS Society
    * It is intended that there will be some charity fund raising on the day, but this is not the primary objective.

CAPTAINS COMMUNICATION NUMBER 8

GENERALLY

Welcome to my August Captains Communication. July was as usual very busy, but the weather
hasn’t always been the best! Let’s hope the weather improves during August so that we can
continue to enjoy our golf and a number of upcoming matches and planned special events.

CLUB CALENDAR – AUGUST 2023

In particular I would draw your attention to the:
• Club Stableford on 5th August – a copy of the notice is attached and will be posted in the
changing rooms.
• The Men’s Summer Pairs on Saturday 12th August – a notice will be separately issued for
this event.
• The Mixed Club Stableford on Friday 16th August.
• Club Medal on 19th August
• And last but by no means least – AL’s CAPTAINS DAY on Saturday 26th August. I will be
writing to you all separately about this event.
If you wish to play in any of the competitions, please simply continue to follow the normal process
for entry.

And an early heads up for Friday 22nd September for a fundraising Charity BINGO night. Please
put this date in your diaries and I will communicate separately with the full details.

SUMMER PAIRS AND SINGLES TOURNAMENTS

Please continue to check your next opponents in the Club and Seniors summer pairs and singles
tournaments and ensure you play your games before the specified deadlines.

JULY COMPETITION RESULTS

Congratulations to the following July winners:
• Club Stableford 8/7/23 – Steve Wagerfield with a great 39 points.
• The Fowler Bowl 14/7/23 – Mark Stinchcombe, with an excellent 42 points in very wet and
windy conditions.
• Club Mixed Stableford 14/7/23 – Also Mark Stinchcombe
• Club Medal 29/7/23 – To Be Advised

MATCH RESULTS

The Seniors played a match at Weston Turville and were unlucky not to win with some very close
results. And unfortunately, we lost both the CBL matches against Waterstock away and Wycombe
Heights home. Both had some very close results against some really strong teams.
My usual request that if you are interested in playing club matches and have not already let the
organisers know, please contact either me, Steve Sargeant or Dick Pooley.
With regard to our ladies, they had another successful month with 2 wins in the home matches
against Whipsnade and Stowe in the Chiltern League.

CHARITY FUND RAISING

The Race Night, held on Saturday 22nd July for the Captains & Ladies Captains charities (MS
Society & MND Society respectively), was very successful and a BIG THANKS go to all those of
you who were able to support it on the night and who sponsored horses and races. The final figure
is still being checked but the net amount raised is in excess of £1,800. - a magnificent result.

This is in addition to the auction of a Kevin Sinfield picture carrying Rob Burrows over the winning
line at the Leeds Marathon for the ladies MND Charity.

COURSE UPDATE

Our course is in good shape, and we all need to support the team working on our behalf.
In this context, we said goodbye to John Harvey on14th July and wish him all the very best in his
new role with Wycombe Wanderers.
Importantly, we have welcomed Jack Martin who has joined us from the Oxfordshire, and he is
already having a positive impact on the course. So, we now have Jack, Chris and Ollie and I would
encourage you all to make sure you thank them for the work they do.

CLUBHOUSE UPDATE

Many thanks again to Sarah, Will, Luke and Alex and the catering team who continue to look after
us and our visitors in an efficient and exemplary manner.

COURSE ETIQUETTE

Dick Pooley has sent out a specific note regarding Course Etiquette and reminding us all that
much of it is our hands so please continue to follow course etiquette standards. As a further
reminder there are some credit card sized handouts in the clubhouse for members and guests.

MIXED PAIRS SUMMER ‘ECLECTIC’ 2023 & HUTLEY CUP

The mixed pairs events of the summer eclectic and the Hutley Cup continue to progress, the
results of which will be reported in due course.

COMMITTEE ASSISTANCE

We really do need further support particularly for assistance with the Competitions Secretary’s role
and I would ask any of you to consider helping. The role has various elements and is currently
being looked after by me and other committee members. There are areas which need further input
so please get in touch if you are able to volunteer some of your time to help. Please contact either
Steve Sargeant or me for a chat and further information.

BRUCE LOOME – PGA PROFESSIONAL

Your reminder that if you need some help with your golf, we are lucky to have Bruce available.
Please contact him at blpga@me.com.

Thank you for your continued support to our club and the various events and competitions. As
usual if you should have any related comments, feedback or queries please feel free to contact me
or any of the Committee Members, and we will do our best to assist you.

Ladies Day Triumph – Well Done Sue Pomeroy!!

What a triumph for Sue Pomeroy and the Ladies!

A great Ladies Day - full of energy and enthusiasm.  Potential new lady members getting to see what it is like to be a Lady Member at PRGC!  Fantastic!

Everyone got behind the event; from PRGC advertising on Facebook and in the clubhouse to members word of mouth amongst friends and family.

Special thanks to the ladies who played with the visiting ladies and to Bruce who put his shoulder behind the event, both giving some coaching and some advice.

Very proud day for PRGC 🙂

Our first Ladies Open Day was held on 26th July and was a great success.  The event was organised from beginning to end by Sue Pomeroy who did a fantastic job and is sure to be in demand to organise another one next year.  Our pro, Bruce, was also available to speak to prospective new members and help them on the practice ground.  A big thanks to Sue, Bruce and all the ladies who took part in so many different ways.

On 28th July Polly Allen hosted an Afternoon Tea at her home.  Many thanks to Polly for providing the ladies with a lovely treat.  The weather was good and the surroundings were beautiful.  Polly’s garden was an absolute picture.  On top of this £340 was raised for Jill’s MND charity.  Many thanks Polly for all your hard work.

Our Guinness and our Will get top marks!

We are always receiving compliments on the quality of our Guinness but it was great to get an accreditation from Guinness itself! Alex from Diageo scored Will 100% for the perfect pour!! Credit also to Mel, our professional line cleaner.

And the Winner of the Fowler Bowl is…

It was an incredibly wet day and not everyone finished but what a great competition!!

A massive thank you to Brian Fowler for the imagination to start this amazing event for PRGC

A massive thanks to our new Green keeper, Jack and to all of the greenkeeping team for their hard work in prepping the course - great job. And of course to Sarah and the clubhouse team for their great customer service. And Trish and team for the great food.

Congratulations to the winners and everyone who played, for embracing and celebrating being a 19+ handicap 🙂

The biggest thanks of all though - to John Harvey who leaves the club today after an amazing career as our Head Greenkeeper.  From a 16 year old apprentice to the youngest Head GK in the country, supported by some of the UK's leading greenkeeping consultants on his great journey with PRGC.  John will be back periodically with his own consultancy hat on - or a bag of sticks on his back to enjoy the beautiful course he helped to create.  Thank you John!

John Harvey and Captain Al Bowyer on John's last day at PRGC

Mike Pool - Front 9 Winner

Jack Riley - 2023 Fowler Bowl Runner Up

Doug Marsh - Back 9 Winner

Important Greenkeeping Team Update…

On the 12th July, Jack Martin will join us replacing John Harvey within the Greenkeeping team. Jack is joining us from the Oxfordshire Golf Club.

Jack has good experience, an eye for detail and a strong work ethic and we are looking forward to having him on board. Please make him feel welcome. John is leaving us on the 14th July after a handover period spread over approximately 4 weeks. During this time Jack has familiarised himself with the machinery and systems that we use.

Chris and Ollie will remain in their existing roles. Jack and I will be recruiting a further team member over the coming months. I would like to express my thanks to John for his work within the team over the past ten years and for providing an effective handover period to Jack. I would also like to express my thanks to Chris who has put a substantial amount of time and effort into the team during the Spring and Summer to date allowing us to keep things running as smoothly as possible.

Please feel free to call me on 07767770364 if you have any questions on the above or on the course in general.

With the kindest regards

Mark Tubb
Joint Managing Director
