CAPTAIN’S RETIREMENT SPEECH 2016-7
I am truly proud and grateful, to have been part of your Committee: To experience at first hand the special skills, the dedication, commitment, and ultimately the achievements of those of your colleagues who freely give of their time in the management of your golf and social activities . Each of the Members of your Committee has contributed with integrity and enthusiasm and this year would not have been as enjoyable or as complete if that was not a fact. There could have been no better team to act for and to represent the expectations and the reactions of you, the Members.
Beryl; calm, efficient and totally reliable: Her determination has always been to make concise sense of and to convey the intentions of sometimes extended and lively debate.
Sue; I have enjoyed sharing the experience of Captaincy with none better: Always there to share the load; equally. Her views have unfailingly been informed, considered and constructive.
Mark – His quiet efficiency and calm temperament ensured that Members’ funds were always in safe hands.
Neil, David and Jill; your Handicap Committee – A sometimes contentious task applied with strict attention to the rules when applicable and compassionate consideration in general reviews: Members interests have always been their first priority.
Barry – The first challenge for me was to find a Competitions Secretary and I will take with me the satisfaction of knowing that I found the best.
Roy – As Members’ Secretary his experience and advice has informed and influenced many of my decisions and actions.
Nick – The answer has always been “yes” even when sometimes the going got tough.
Gary – Saw the potential conflict in the title of “Management” and took the polemic out of it. Always ready to listen and improve by consensus, he has governed our Club progressively and in the true spirit of friendship and with clear direction, and in the hard work of John, Jake and Bob we have seen the results in the quality of our course.
Bruce must deserve special thanks for bringing to our Club his expertise as a coach together with the idea, now a unique selling feature, of our Academy Course which we have started to use to great benefit and which will mature to be of real and practical value to Members as well as those who look to our website for reasons to join us. I am not sure that we are always worthy of our Class A PGA Professional but I would like to believe that I speak for all Members when I express gratitude for the energy and gravitas that he brought to our Club. I regard Bruce as our “friend in the business”.
There is a special person that I must not overlook; Doreen who works quietly and tirelessly with dedicated green fingers to make our Club welcoming and attractive.
It has been my privilege to act as figurehead of the good ship PRGC and I will step down happy and satisfied with the achievements of the representatives and the Members of our Club.
I ask only that you give your new Committee the support and encouragement I have enjoyed in my memorable year as your Captain.
Thank you.
