Greenkeeper Update from Jack

Work on the 4th Tee and the back of the 3rd Green will allow more sunlight.  Greater access to the glow of the sun's rays will offer several benefits:

  1. Healthier Grass: Sunlight is vital for photosynthesis, the process by which grass converts sunlight into energy. More sunlight means healthier, stronger, and more vibrant grass.
  2. Reduced Disease: Fungal diseases, such as mold and mildew, thrive in damp and shaded areas. Increased sunlight can help keep these diseases at bay by reducing moisture and improving air circulation.
  3. Improved Playability: Firmer and healthier greens and tees offer a more consistent playing surface.
  4. Enhanced Aesthetics: Sunlight creates a lusher, green appearance, making it more visually appealing
  5. Better Recovery: Grass that receives ample sunlight can recover more quickly from wear and tear, leading to a more resilient playing surface.

Will keep you posted on other work...

Best

Jack

Public Liability Insurance Refresh

We have recently received some questions regarding the public liability insurance offer that he have at PRGC.

Full details are on the website here.

In short, England Golf cover all paid up members through a company called Marsh.  We pay for a bolt on to Marsh which covers some additional features such as using a buggy on the course.

We also ensure that everyone playing the course is insured for public liability, green fees and e-Player cards.

Bruce’s first group lesson dates announced for members – please book early

Bruce sends his regards from his winter coaching activities in Thailand.  Bruce is a specialist full time Class A PGA Professional and during the off peak coaching season in the UK, when most pros are turning their hands to selling warm clothing, he is actively coaching and specialising in what he does best.  We are blessed that he has based his Bruce Loome School of Golf at PRGC and very much looking forward to his return in the spring.  Remember, coaching at PRGC is with real balls, on real grass, on a purpose built Academy Practise Area, with state of the art 'backward chaining' coaching.

He is starting his PRGC coaching season this May 1st with a bang and taking bookings now.

  • Individual lessons from May 1st
  • Group lessons starting with a group Refresher Course to get you on the right track for the season, followed up by a Specialist Shot group course - see below.

Even if you can't make these dates, please contact us if any of the courses appeal to you.  We will be organising alternative dates.

Separately Bruce is re-introducing the successful backward chaining led Smart Shot coaching from June, a project being led by Luke from a marketing perspective as part of his apprenticeship and in conjunction with work being carried out by Jack to prepare the Academy Practice Area.
Bruce developed '9 smart shots to the perfect short game' and coaching around these shots will support both existing members and the new Academy Programme being driven by the Ladies Section - more to follow...

In the meantime, please book your lessons early to maximise the fun and enjoyment you get out of this season 🙂

Wonderful collaboration with the ladies achieves…

Wonderful collaboration with the ladies delivers a lovely and welcome addition the changing area.

Covid has changed many things in public life and indeed golf... one of them has been the reduction in the use of changing rooms and shower facilities.  Ladies Captain Liz France presented an innovative idea to convert one of their showers to a foot spa.  The ladies worked collaboratively with Sarah and came up with a cracking idea that turns both showers into a foot spa!  Nice work!!!

Lot’s happening on the course and practice area…

Message from Jack, Head Greenkeeper

Lots of prep work taking place on the course at the moment ahead of spring including:

  • Greens: receiving protective fungicides and fertiliser to protect them through the harsh winter conditions.
  • Tees: being protected as much as possible during the severe wet weather from becoming unrecoverable 'Sunday league football goal mouths'. Plus work taking place to slightly widen the 6th tee.

  • Buggy paths: investment in buggies and buggy paths is an important part of our strategy, enabling members to extend their playing years and to be able to play all year round using a buggy. As part of this strategy, a new woodchip buggy path is being introduced along the fence line of the 7th tee to the 18th green and the paths around the 1st and 6th tees have been enhanced.
  • Bunkers: Sand top ups have already been completed on the 1st (green side), 5th (green side) and 4th (green side).
  • Fence lines: being tidied along the railway side of the 2nd and 7th.

Importantly, to support our learning culture at the club we are renovating the practise net area (a temporary solution is in place for the time being).  We are also prepping the greens, approaches and bunkers on the practise area so they are in the best possible condition for the peak season.
