Lady Captain’s May 2025 Update

P R G C - LADIES SECTION

May/June Newsletter from The Lady Captain

May has been very busy, and our summer calendar is even busier. We look forward to plenty of exciting golf both locally and with other clubs in the County and beyond.

Wed 7th  We changed the format to one of our ladies morning competitions and still had a most enjoyable morning. We were due to play our medal competition but had to cancel this at the last minute.

From Monday the 12th to Wednesday the 14th, we attended our annual three-day break at Staverton Park. What a wonderful trip. All credit must go to our Social Team consisting of Rosie Brand and Val Bate. They organised the golf. the accommodation, the food and the entertainment. The good weather also helped as it was sunshine all the way! A brilliant time was had by all, so our thanks go to these 2 ladies for all their hard work. The main competition for  The White Horse Trophy was won by Val Bate and the runner up was Jill Peppett. Congratulations to both ladies.

Thursday 15th  We played our first League Match of the season against the ladies from Weston Turville. Our ladies played exceptionally well and beat them resoundingly by 3 matches to zero. A maximum 6 points on the scoreboard for us. Well done ladies.

Sunday 18th   Ladies Open Day .  What a success! Our thanks must go to the clubhouse team, the greenkeepers, Bruce Loome, our Pro and the lady members who helped on the day. Last but certainly not least our thanks must go to Sue Pomeroy, our County Rep and one of our match organisers. Sue, who was the instigator of this Open Day, with the help of Sarah (our clubhouse manager) and Luke (our Pro Shop Manager) have greatly managed  to increase the numbers of our Lady members here at PRGC. On the day we all had a great time meeting these ladies who liked what they saw in our club and wanted to join. We have recruited 6 flexi members and 1 new 7 day member so far. Some are return to golf ladies, some are “have had lessons but want to learn more” while others are completely new and are having “first time” lessons with Bruce Loome our Club Pro. Whichever category these ladies are in, our Ladies Section here at PRGC sincerely welcome them to the club and we look forward to introducing them to more of our members and helping them to enjoy their journey into golf.

Wed 21st Seniors Cup  This was a greatly contested competition and was won by Chris Hallett, so well done Chris.

Sat 10th and Wed 28th  These are the dates we played the monthly Medal. Sat for the weekend players and wed for the weekday members. 13 ladies entered and the competition was won by Christine Stevens with a nett score of 69. Alma Piddington was second with a nett score of 73. Congratulations to both ladies.

Ladies Open Day Triumph Success

We would like to say a huge thank you to Sue Pomeroy, ex Ladies Captain for her leadership of the Ladies Open Day initiative - great camaraderie and team spirit.  Sue pushed hard for BCLGA support and achieved a grant to support the event.  The clubhouse team have loved working on this and were able to support the bid with promotional materials and help drive potential visitors to the day with marketing activity.  Just under 10,000 Facebook hits, external road signage, clubhouse signage and emails.  A big thanks also to Liz France for her leadership in shaping the priorities for the day.

On the day itself we have so many people to thank for their support:

  • Bruce Loome was amazing on the day, voluntarily giving up his time and energy to create a little coaching fun on the putting green whilst also being accessible for any questions.  Thank you Bruce.
  • The Ladies [Sue Pomeroy, Liz France. Donna Convery, Jill Peppett, Melinda Pooley, Chris Hallett and Gill Young], who volunteered their time to show off how great it is to become part of the PRGC ladies.

In particular - a massive thanks to Sue Pomeroy for her Boards promoting the Ladies Section and to Donna, a reasonably new member to the group, who has encouraged some of her friends to give us a try on one of our trial membership pathways.  Thank you all so much for your help.

  • The clubhouse team; a big thank you to Sarah and Luke for manning the Club promotional boards, where they highlighted the pathways into membership and to Chloe who kept the customer service behind the bar to an amazing standard - including a regular supply of cake!  The teamwork behind the scenes on this event was amazing.
  • The greenkeeping team; their work on the new Practise Area and Warm Up Nets in particular has made such a difference.  Well done and a huge thanks to Jack, Chris and Evan.

All in all we had a very successful day with the new e-Flexi Trial Membership pathway proving to be hugely successful.

Thank you again to all who helped and supported.  Let's ensure that our new ladies have an amazing induction and we thank the Ladies Section in advance for the work they will be doing along with the clubhouse team in making the trial memberships a success.

Mens Captain May 2025 Update

PR GC - Captain's Monthly Message  -  May 2025.

Good Day

A welcome warm start to May, means that at least all the major internal club competitions can begin without delay.

Recent Results.

An extremely good result in our Mixed Match at home to Chartridge Park, beating them 3 1/2 to 2 1/2.  Well done to the team and Jill Peppett for organising.

In the first Mens CBL match of the season, our team claimed a hard fought draw at home against a very strong Wycombe Heights team,    3 - 3  with several matches going all the way!  Again, well done to Steve Sargeant and the team.

April was the last month of the Seniors CBL matches and Dave Orford and team beat Aylesbury Vale at home  4 - 2  which lead to Chartridge Park eventually winnng the league.  In the "wind up" for this competition at Chartridge Park on 28th April, we entered seven players for the Texas Scramble, all of whom played in different mixed teams.  In the only team from fourteen that did NOT contain a Chartridge Park player, my team scored a nett 55 and beat five other teams on countback!  Dave Orford will put the full league results up in the mens locker room. We came third in the league.

Club Results.

Mens April Medal,  Division one was won by Barry Woledge with a very impressive nett 62, from Neil Martin nett 68.

Division two was won by Mark Stinchcombe with nett 65, from Richard Aldridge nett 69.

The Seniors Monthly Club Stableford was won by Mike Pool with 45 points, from Steve Tucker with 43 points.

The Friday Mixed Club Stableford was won by John North with 37 points, from Mike Pool with 36 points.

The Mens April Club Stableford was won by Neil Martin with 39 points, from Dick Pooley with 35 points.

The St. George's Day, Captain's Challenge - "3 clubs and a putter" was won by Tony Taylor with 37 points, on countback from Meron Jacyna. Four delightful ladies joined us for this competition, after which all 24 players enjoyed a lovely roast beef lunch with all the trimmings. It should be noted that both Al Bowyer and Ladies Captain, Liz France also achieved 37 points in a very tightly contested match. Our competitions secretary has not really been forgiven (by me) for naming it "St. Davids Day"!!  by accident of course!!  Sarah kindly ensured that all the correct St. Georges flags were flying.  The "St. George's Day Crystal Vase" team winners were Melinda Pooley, Luke Viney and Meron Jacyna.

Another event that PR GC hosted in April, was the Captains Charity Day, where "On Course Foundation" were entertained to lunch and then a Texas scramble. OCF is a small charity that endeavours to help wounded ex Service personnel back into civvy street through golf. One of their players had been shot in the throat and still uses a button communication system, having also recovered from a quadruple heart by pass. Another player was badly wounded in Iraq having been shot in the back and legs. Many of these folk, both men and women, suffer from PTSD and from which it sometimes takes years to recover, if ever. If anyone would like further information on this wonderful organisation, please contact me separately.

Future Events.

The mens away trip to Draycotes Hotel and Whitefields Golf Club takes place on 6th, 7th and 8th May.  (32 players)

The ladies away trip to Staverton Park Hotel and Golf Club is from 12th to 14th May.  (13 players)

Saturday 3rd May - we are at home to Beaconsfield GC in our first match of the Hillman Trophy. We wish our team of seven, "Much Good Fortune and Play Well!"

Sat. 10th May.  Club Monthly Medal, & CBL Richings Park - away.

Tues. 13th May. Seniors Monthly Club Medal.

Sat. 17th May. Mens Spring Stableford

Tues. 20th May. Grandads Cup.

Fri. 23rd May.  Mixed Club Stableford.

Sat. 24th May. CBL vs. Weston Turville - Home.

Tues. 27th May. Seniors (2024 washed out replay) of the Seniors Championship.

Sat. 31st May. CBL vs. 3-Locks - Away.

WAGs runs on every Wednesday throughout the Summer - all welcome. Dave Mackenzie is the main contact.

RAGs will be playing at the North Oxford GC (it's last year!) on Monday 2nd June. Contact John Stephenson. Again all welcome.

Saturday 9th August. Captains Day.  This year the theme will be Vintage Golf 1920s/1930s. ie. Plus fours, check waistcoats and flat caps for men and tweed skirts for ladies!  I appreciate it might be a very hot day, in which case the dress code maybe relaxed a little!  All welcome and further details to follow.

Club Pro Shop.

Please contact Luke Viney for all your golfing requirements, from gloves to trolleys.

Bruce Loome.

We understand that Bruce, having partially recovered from his serious motor accident, will be back with us in a couple of weeks.

Teeing off from White & Gold 18th tee.

I would just like to confirm to all players that it will become a local rule, and with immediate effect, that under no circumstances should any member, green fee, or e-card player attempt a shot at the green from this tee.  "New reception staff" will be trained to ensure sufficient emphasis is put on this requirement. And posters will be put up to the same effect.

Meanwhile enjoy the good weather and your golf.

Dick Pooley, Club Captain.

Lady Captain’s May Update

P R G C - LADIES SECTION

April /May Newsletter from The Lady Captain

We started the month with good weather which continued for over 2 weeks. Lots of golf was played and enjoyed.

Wed 2nd     This was a blue ball competition in teams of 3. Fun was had by all and the winners were Melinda, Anne and Valerie. Well done ladies.

Wed 9th   This was a greensomes competition with 12 ladies taking part. This was played in pairs and the winners were Fiona and Gill. Congratulations and well played.

Sadly, due to lack of entrants we had to CANCEL the BCLGA Junior Girls Competition which was due to take place on the Wed 9th.

Saturday, 12th This event was a County 9-Hole Open Competition for all county members.  All participants had an enjoyable afternoon. Princes Risborough had a clean sweep with Jill Peppet winning Division 1 and Sue Pomeroy winning Division 2.  Well done both.

Spring Stableford. This was held on Sat 5th and Wed 16th There 2 weekend entrants and 13 weekday entrants. The clear winner was Arlinda with 42pts and second was Chris Hallett with 38pts. Well played.

Tues 22nd St George’s Day.   This is a day our Club Captain Dick Pooley uses for raising money for the his Charity. The members of the ladies section were invited to join in and  a fun day was had going round with only 3 clubs and a putter. Again, proof that a full bag of clubs is not necessary. 4 people came in with a score of 37pts. 3 men and yours truly! On countback I was 4th! !  A big thank you to Dick for organising such a fun day, and I hope he made lots for his charity.

Now this was when the weather decided to go against us and we had to cancel our golf on the 23rd. It had been raining heavily early on in the morning, and the temperature dropped. There was also a very cold wind, so ladies decided coffee/tea etc and a warm clubhouse was a very good idea!

Wed 30th This was a great morning. A field of 12 ladies entered and the weather was HOT. We played a greensomes competition which was won by Sue Pomeroy and Polly Allen. Well Done. More ladies then joined us for lunch, and after we had a presentation from Georgia Thornton, who is the Regional Rep for our chosen charity – Alzheimer’s UK. She was so informative and really gave us an insight into this terrible illness and how it impacts on the lives of so many people.

We had also invited Alan Austin, the husband of our dear friend Beryl who passed in Jan. Before Beryl’s funeral, Alan asked people not to buy flowers but to donate to Alzheimer’s as he thought Beryl would want that. A fantastic £1000 was raised and with Gift Aid the charity are now over £1100 better off. This money was raised by the kindness and thoughtfulness of Beryl’s family and friends and all the members of our Golf Club who attended her funeral. The cheque was presented by myself and my VC Melinda on behalf of Alan and his family. A very moving moment!
