Fellow RAGS,
22 members gathered at Studley Wood for the last meeting of RAGS this season. It began with our usual bacon baps at 10.00 am before teeing off at 11.00 am.
It was perfect golfing weather, continuous sun with several in shorts, with most of us wishing we had worn by the time golf had finished. Studley Wood was in excellent condition with perfect fairways and lightening greens. However, the length of the course proved a challenge for many with average scores being lower than usual. However, the cream rose to the top as usual with Mark Collins storming away leaving the rest of us in his wake. He’s jetting off to New York for the Ryder cup at the weekend and we suggested he packs his clubs in case the European team are down a player.
Dick Pooley, the immediate past captain, was asked to present the prizes with the following winners.
Overall winner – Mark Collins with 36 points winning £20 and taking the RAGS trophy.
Ladies’ winner – Jill Peppett retaining the Ladies Trophy with 22 points and £15.
Winner – front 9 – Craig Whitworth with 16 points and £10. A member of S/W but obviously eased off to give us all a chance.
Winner – back 9 – Barry Woledge with 19 points and £10.
Longest drive (Ladies) – Chris Stevens winning £10
Longest drive (Men) – Dave Thomas winning £10
Nearest the pin – Adam Zaziemski winning £10. The pro must have been feeling humourless as he recommended the 4th green, tough for all players from an elevated tee with ditch in front of the green. Only two players reached or held the green.
A special award was presented to Malcolm Dodds who was retiring from competitive golf on entering his 9th decade in 5 weeks’ time. Malcolm had been a regular in RAGS from the beginning when he attended the inaugural outing in 2020 and missed only two or three outings since that time. The memento was to remind him of his time with his friends in RAGS coupled with a personal thanks from John Stephenson for his continuous support.
Thanks to everyone who took part and congratulations to all the winners. Many players said they would like another go at Studley Wood so we might try and build it in to a future programme. Pictures of the winners’ presentations are attached.
RAGS will reconvene again next Spring when we hope to play more courses to test our endurance and abilities at other clubs so look out for further notices in early Spring. Meanwhile, my thanks to all participants who have made these outings so congenial and fun.
Best wishes,
John
