Beryl’s Ladies Update -April 2023
Princes Risborough Golf Club
APRIL NEWSLETTER FROM YOUR LADIES COMMITTEE
Hello Ladies
The ladies were most unfortunate this month as due to weather the only competition played was the Weekend March Stableford. This was won by Jill Peppett, so many congratulations Jill.
Although we did not play golf on many of the Wednesdays, we did get together and have morning coffee and lunch when the competitions were cancelled. We had an especially nice surprise lunch for Jill on her birthday, which happened to fall on a Wednesday!
However, the Quiz night on 17 March was a great success, with nearly a hundred people attending. It was wonderful to see the club so full and it seemed as though everyone had a most enjoyable time, with a very good buffet provided by Tricia. The quiz was organised by the MND Charity and they provided the quiz master, with sterling help from Sue Pomeroy. The quiz was won by the Mens Captain’s team and runner-up was the Vice-Captain’s team. A few good-natured cries of “Fixed” were heard but the great news is that £656 was raised in aid of our captains’ charities, with £328 being given to each of the MND and MS charities.
The other good news is that the twice postponed Away Day at Wycombe Heights Par 3 course was eventually played on 27 March. It was a beautiful day with brilliant sunshine and the results of the competition were:
Winner Jill Peppett
Fewest Putts Liz France
Nearest the pin Chris Hallett
Well done ladies.

Captain’s April ‘Celebrational’ Update
CAPTAINS APRIL UPDATE - COMMUNICATION NUMBER 4
*STOP PRESS*
Your seniors have won the seniors CBL league following their great win against Chartridge today. Congratulations to Steve Sargeant and his team.
GENERALLY
Welcome to my latest Captains Communication which I hope you find useful and interesting. It has been a very busy time but still pretty challenging weather wise. That said the various planned competitions and matches all successfully took place.
CLUB CALENDAR – APRIL 2023
I attach the current APRIL 2023 detailed calendar and, as was March, April is another busy month with further various matches and the men’s and ladies Spring Stablefords. This also includes the start of the Hillman trophy at the end of the month and of course the commencement of the WAGS on 5th April.
As usual if you wish to play in any of the competitions, please simply follow the normal process for entry. And please don’t forget if you want to represent the club in matches, please contact myself, Steve Sargeant or Dick Pooley. We are always looking for new blood!
CHARITY QUIZ 17th MARCH 2023
The Charity Quiz was a great success with 92 people attending and over £650 being raised for the Ladies and Gents charities, the MND and MS Societies respectively. A massive THANKS to Sue Pomeroy for all her hard work and to you all for your superb support. Further fundraising events will be organised throughout the year so please watch out for publicity and communications for these.
SUMMER PAIRS AND SINGLES TOURNAMENTS
The entry lists for the Club and Seniors summer pairs and singles tournaments are now closed and Steve Sargeant is now working on the draws for the various events. Please ensure you play your matches within the allotted timescales.
MARCH MENS RESULTS
Congratulations to the following March winners:
- Dick Pooley for winning the Club Stableford on 11th March with 38 points
- Doug Taylor for his win in Seniors Stableford on 14th March with a superb 44 points,
- Dennis Mawby for his incredible ‘net 60’ in the first club medal of the year on 25th I understand Dennis took a couple of lessons from Bruce (see later information), which most obviously worked.
- Mike Smith for winning the Seniors. Champion of Champions on 28th March and to Alan Caldicott for winning the ‘Best of the Rest’
MATCH RESULTS
As mentioned, the Seniors have won the Senior’s CBL and in the month won matches against Weston Turville away; Little Hay away; Chartridge home having lost the away leg.
In addition, we unfortunately lost our first match in the Club CBL to a very strong Wycombe Heights team, away.
And we have won our first two Senior’s friendlies against Whiteleaf and Weston Turville both home.
Overall, a very successful month. Thanks and congratulations to all those who played in the various matches
COURSE UPDATE
We have received very good comments about the course from visiting teams, particularly regarding the standard of our greens. So, a big thanks to our green keeping team who are doing a great job.
Dick Pooley together with a number of members have carried out the first divot/badger damage repairing exercise, and more are planned. Please let Dick know if you are able to assist with this. In addition, the green keepers have applied topsoil to the damage on the 7th which is making a big difference to that fairway.
COURSE ETIQUETTE
We are continuing our drive for better and consistent course etiquette and would remind you to remind all players in your groups to maintain high standards of etiquette and in particular repair all pitch marks, replace divots and rake bunkers. The more we do to look after our course the better it will be for all.
MIXED PAIRS SUMMER ‘ECLECTIC’ 2023
I have separately launched this years mixed pairs eclectic and am looking for more teams. If you want to play in this tournament, please advise me together with your playing partner. If you don’t currently have a playing partner let me know and I will find a suitable one for you.
COMMITTEE ASSISTANCE
We are still looking for further assistance, particularly in the areas of competition organisation, so if you are able to volunteer some of your time to help, please contact either Steve Sargeant or me for further information.
BRUCE LOOME – PGA PROFESSIONAL
A reminder that Bruce is now available for lessons and as evidenced by Dennis’s great score in the medal they do make a difference! If you are interested in Bruce helping you to improve, please contact him at blpga@me.com.
And finally, thank you for your continued support to our club and the various events and competitions. As usual if you should have any related comments, feedback or queries please feel free to contact me or any of the Committee Members, and we will do our best to assist you.

PRGC Win the SCBL Bill Wells Trophy

PRGC Seniors win the prestigious Bill Wells Trophy and are the 2023 Seniors Breakfast League champions!!
Another CBL triumph for Steve Sargeant's valiant men.
The winning captain was wonderfully gracious and his words will be music to the greenkeepers ears - "no complaints, the greens were superb!"
It was a little nerve wracking at 3-2, with Al Bowyer and Steve Williams marching up the 18th - but they too won and PRGC came in as 4-2 winners.
Well done Sarah, well done Trish, well done the greenkeepers and of course well done Steve and team - what a top day
Gas Delivery Problems – Update
We have finally received our promised delivery of gas from Calor and apologise for the inconvenience caused.
What happened?
Our gas ran out on Sunday morning with no alert from Calor. This meant that the clubhouse, the clubhouse accommodation and the kitchen had no gas. Disaster. Calor were impossible to get through to but finally after hours and hours of chasing and escalation, we took delivery at circa 9am this Thursday morning.
How it should work?
We have a fully outsourced solution for our gas supply with Calor which, up until recently, has been working extremely well. A tank sensor alerts Calor that we need a new delivery, they deliver, we pay them by DD - it is as simple as that.
What has gone wrong? A perfect storm.
- Supply issues due to the war
- Delivery driver shortages
- Recent delivery backlogs from the recent weather
- A central office re-organisation which the driver claims is having serious teething issues
- Call centre in melt down and our account manager on holiday
What are we doing about it?
- Escalation contact established
- Principles of delayed supply communication agreed
- Conducting a gas supplier review
- Reducing our reliance on gas
- Introducing further electric contingency options to protect us better in the future
I hope that this helps clarify the situation regarding the recent gas supply issues, we will keep you posted on progress and once again apologise for the inconvenience caused.
Ladies Charity Raffle – Update
Sue Pomeroy has kindly updated us on how the Stroke Unit are using the sizeable donation from the ladies raffle - and its a lovely idea.
