OCTOBER Schedule
THE WINNERS CIRCLE
Men’s Pairs Summer Knock Out
Congratulations to Pete Major and Dave Mackenzie who beat David Orford and Mark Richards on the 18th green to win this years’ summer pairs KO. This is the first of the knock outs to be completed so congratulations to all who took part in managing to get this competition completed on time
The California Cup
Congratulations to Bex Lowry and Brian Sims for winning this years’ edition of the California Cup Mixed greensomes event. They came in with an outstanding 43 points and pipped Christine and Mike Stevens by one point.
Men’s Club Handicap Singles Knock Out
Congratulations to David Orford who squeezed past Pete Smith 4&3 in the final of this years’ handicap knockout competition. Great to see a couple of our senior members slugging it out in the final of the Club event having seen off a few “youngsters” on the way to the final. David is having a stellar year having already won the Barcilon cup Handicap Championship so very well done indeed.
RYDERHEIM CUP
The 2022 version of this event will take place on Saturday 01 October. Due to a disappointingly low sign up the format has been changed and the event will now be played over 18 holes with a rolling rather than shotgun start. Teams will play 6 holes of foursomes, then 6 holes of four ball better ball and finally 6 holes of singles. All scores will count. The overall team winners will win the RyderHeim Cup and there are also prizes for best foursomes’ pair, best fourball better ball pair and best singles player.
Play will start at 0830 and lunch will start from 1330. Presentations will be made at circa 1415.
There are still spaces so if you want to play you can still sign up for this fun and entertaining event. Contact Barry Woledge or Sarah Tietjen if you want to play.
CHILTERN BREAKFAST LEAGUE
Well, what a season this has been for the boys in the CBL team. It all came down to the last match of the season at home on Saturday 17th September between us and Shendish Manor. Both clubs were in the running to win the division and qualify for the play offs but the dice was very much loaded in the favour of Shendish Manor who only needed one point to take the title. Our team, ably led by Captain Al Bowyer, were very much up for this match, particularly when they saw Shendish Manor had brought a supporters’ club!
All six games were very tight but in the end were victorious 5.5 to 0.5, won the division and qualified for the play offs for the second year running. To say Captain Al Bowyer was buoyant is an understatement in the extreme. He actually won the whole match by sinking the winning putt on the 18th green in the last rubber!!
Amazingly The playoff match with Three Locks was also decided by the last putt in the last match on the last hole. This time we were not so fortunate as it was Three Locks who sunk the putt to secure the 3.5: 2.5 win.
No grand final for us this year but the team did brilliantly and divisional winners delivers us another trophy. Steve Sargeant will now lead the team for the end of season CBL Challenge Cup on 16 October.
SENIORS MATCHES
The seniors match season was completed with the away match at Hunstwood and the home and away double header with Chartridge Park. Tight matches all but we came out the wrong side. Our final match of the season is the rescheduled match with Wycombe Heights on 13th October. Thereafter we are into the Seniors CBL matches.
SENIORS CHILTERN BREAKFAST LEAGUE (SCBL)
As a club we have been invited to join the seniors CBL which actually plays its matches through the winter months. You will now see match dates appearing in the schedule of competitions and matches. Steve Sargeant is in charge so please support him when, he needs to put the teams together.

THE MEMBERS AGM AND ELECTION OFFFICERS: Tuesday 01 November
This annual meeting is the opportunity for all members to hear a report from all of the Officers of the club, ask appropriate questions and participate in the election of the Officers for the new golfing year. With a number of Committee members standing down, our Captain, Al Bowyer has offered to stand for a second year so he can use his experience to steer the club through next year.
As with last year, we will also take this opportunity to present the prizes to those who have won the summer KO competitions and recognise our Divisional champion CBL team. The meeting is 1900 for a 1930 start so time for a drink and chinwag in addition to the meeting.
WORLD HANDICAP SYSTEM (WHS) and GENERAL PLAY CARDS
The author was very surprised to hear from some “mature” members of the club including a past Captain no less, that with the onset of WHS, once you have the 20 rounds in you do not need to submit general play cards for handicapping!!!!!!
THAT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT THE CASE. The WHS and England Golf require that EVERY full round played over the measured courses to R&A rules, MUST be submitted to the WHS for handicap calculation.
This is how the system can deliver a real time and accurate assessment of a players’ handicap to ensure it is valid and current for any competition. Players who do not submit cards EVERY time they play are abusing the handicap system and liable to penalty, disqualification or disbarment from competition golf.
All our courses (currently White, Yellow and Red) are measured and there is no excuse for not uploading cards. You can do this through the HDIDo portal in the clubhouse or via the England Golf App on your phone. Please remember to sign in first before you play.
I know that the Tuesday Seniors and Friday Stableford all follow the rules and our monthly medals, stablefords and board competitions are all compliant. I am not sure of the remainder so will all our competitive playing groups outwith these competitions please take note: AKA the Saturday early crew, SODS, Grumpies, Sunday Strollers and Red Sox etc.
AND FINALLY-A MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHOR!!!!
This is my last Monthly update as I am stepping down as Competitions Secretary at the AGM. It started as something of an occasional reminder to members of upcoming events and then took on an altogether different guise during Covid lockdown.
In the middle of that we had the launch of the World Handicap System where I found myself trusted with understanding and interpreting the circa 250 pages of WHS rules for the benefit of members! I did this in partnership with my 3 Handicap Secretaries, Neil Martin (club), Steve Williams (Seniors) and Jill Peppett (ladies), who together make up the Handicap Committee. It was a challenging and thankless task which we as volunteers took on board and somehow managed to get most of it right. The note above on members current understanding of when to upload cards would however suggest we still have some way to go yet!!
Finally, a word of thanks to the four Captains I have supported in the past 5 years: Brian Fowler (who asked me to stand in temporarily in 2017!), John Verrall, Craig Whitworth and Al Bowyer. All were excellent Captains and did the club proud.
I trust you have all found these updates helpful and informative.
Happy Golfing.
