Captain’s Mid Jan Update

PRGC Captains January 2025 Message.

Well, here we are in 2025, a New Year, with new challenges and maybe some New Year resolutions for some!

I hope everyone enjoyed the Christmas period with Family and Friends and is raring to get out and get those HCPs into single digits on the course!!!

Obviously, the main event before Christmas was the Florida Scramble and all the results went out with the regular PRGC online Newsletter.

Other Results:

November Friday Mixed Club Stableford was won by Gordon Wilkins with 39 points.

Seniors December Monthly Club Stableford was won by Chris Thorne with 39 points.

December Friday Mixed Club Stableford was won by Mike Smith with 35 points.

Mens December Club Stableford was won by Toby Casella with 35 points.

Well done to all the Winners and competitors.

Forthcoming Events.

Obviously the weather is going to be playing havoc with January competitions, with both mats and temporary greens in use, but we hope the following will take place:

Tuesday 14th Jan. Seniors Monthly Club Stableford and Cheque Presentation to Captains Charity O C F representative, (around 12 noon) All welcome.

Friday 17th Jan. Mixed Club Stableford.

Saturday 25th Jan. Club Stableford.

Main Committee Meeting - Monday 13th January.

Refurbished Golf Balls.

Our Lady Captain, Liz France has asked me to thank everyone who donated all their old and used golf balls to hers and mine charities. The first tranche resulted in a payment of over £90.00 which will be divided between the two. She will start collecting again this month, so please dig deep into your sheds and garages for as many as you can find.

Club Pro Shop.

After his Christmas break (playing some golf with Bruce in Thailand) our very own Luke Viney is back involved with selling all things golf.

Mens Away Trip 6th/7th/8th May 2025.

I am pleased to report that we now have 31 deposits paid with one more pending, so that will be a "full house" for our visit to Draycotes Hotel & Whitefield GC.  {Some prizes will be sponsored by a prestigious former Captain!}

Social.

Possible Ladies section event in March. Watch out for more information.

Enjoy your golf and I look forward to seeing both old and new members on the course or in the Clubhouse.

Dick Pooley, Club Captain.

Luke’s New Pro Shop Catalogue

Luke has developed a new PRGC Pro Shop Catalogue - perfect for gifts, upgrading or accessorising your current golfing gear!  Simply order at the pro shop and pick it up from the club when it is delivered?

The only restriction we put on Luke was that he when he set prices, he matched the best online price at the time for the products ordered.

This is a great new service and we'd like to thank Luke for the time and effort he has put into creating it.

Please ask Luke for more details.  We will be launching the online version shortly.

We hope you enjoyed your golf in June – it has certainly been very hot with no matches this month cancelled due to weather conditions.  The results for June are:

June results:

Wishlade Trophy                               Winner: Sue Pomeroy

The ladies had a most enjoyable Lady Captain’s Day this month, with lunch after the golf and a dinner in the evening at which a raffle was held in aid of our charity, MNDA, which raised another £175.  So far this year we have raised £2016.  A magnificent effort.

The Club Championship is a 2-day event played in June, the winners being awarded the Barcilon Cup.  The ladies Barcilon Cup (Club Champion) is awarded to the lady with the lowest scratch score over the 2 days.  The Handicap Champion Trophy (Handicap Champion) is awarded to the lady with the lowest score after handicap has been taken into account.  The winners this year were:

Club Champion and winner of the Barcilon Cup – Jill Peppett

Handicap Champion and winner of the Handicap Trophy – Judy Pope

(for those who do not know, Jill and Judy are mother and daughter, so keeping it very much in the family!)

Many congratulations to all the winners.

Only one match played in June – League v Chiltern Forest at home - which was a win for PRGC.

DECEMBER NEWSLETTER FROM YOUR LADIES COMMITTEE

Hello Ladies

The weather has been a bit mixed during November, with our away day at Wycombe Heights being postponed until next year.

The results for November are:

Inaugural Florida Scramble     Winners: Liz France, Alma Piddington & Gerry Walker

November Stableford            Winner:  Rosie Brand

Jill’s charity is MNDA and when the Bonus Golf competition was cancelled due to bad weather, instead of playing golf the ladies met for coffee and were shown a very moving video about Rob Burrow, who suffers from Motor Neurone Disease.

Polly Allen and Sue Pomeroy have put together a wonderful Christmas hamper to raffle in aid of the MND Association.  Raffle tickets at £5 are available from the bar where the hamper is now displayed.

As regards golf, we must just once again mention that hedgehog wheels must now be used on golf trolleys at all times.  Any players without hedgehog wheels must only use trolleys in the rough at the side of the fairways.

December programme:

Fri 2        Mixed Stableford

Sat 3        December Stableford

Wed 7      December Stableford

Fri 9        Mixed Stableford

Wed 14   Turkey Trot competition and lunch

Fri 16      Mixed Stableford

Some interesting things we are doing to keep the golf fun at PRGC…

Please find below some of the actions taken by the Clubhouse team to make golf more enjoyable for everyone - little things but perhaps worth knowing about...

At every stage of the journey we want e-Player Card holders to remember the things which are important to keep it fun for everyone playing at PRGC.

From signing up and receiving their e-Player Card...

To making bookings and receiving their confirmation emails.

The priority on the tee booking application ie prior to arrival is wearing the correct attire.

The priority once at the club and playing is to ensure that everyone understands the value of repairing pitch marks, raking bunkers and avoiding slow play.

See below...

What every new e-Player Card Application Form includes...

Politely asking everyone to sign up to the mantra that we wish all golfers at PRGC to work to

What it now says at the top of every new e-Player Card

What every tee booking now receives when they book and within their confirmation e-mail.

JUNE Schedule

THE WINNERS CIRCLE

THE MIKE JEFFERSON MEMORIAL TROPHY: Congratulations to BRIAN SIMS who emerged victorious in the second board competition of 2022. This was a very tight competition and Brian won on countback from Pete Major with both scoring +2 on the day. This is our only mixed board competition and the best placed lady was Bex Lowry with a highly creditable -2.

COMPETITIVE MATCHES

THE HILLMAN TROPHY

Having defeated Badgemore Park, Windmill Hill and Burnham Beeches our men’s singles team are now in the third round of this years’ BB&O Hillman Trophy. A win in the next round against either West Berkshire or Henley will put the team in the quarter finals. Well played.

CHILTERN BREAKFAST LEAGUE

The team have made a storming start to this season with home and away wins against Chesfield Downs. Next up are Stocks at home on 11th June so let’s hope the form continues. Well played

  • Wednesday Morning: Ladies
  • Wednesday Afternoon: WAGS (Wednesday afternoon golf society)
  • Friday Morning:             Mixed Singles Stableford (ladies and gentlemen)

THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP:

The Barcilon Cup scratch competition and the Handicap Championship: Ladies and Gentlemen

This 36-hole event embracing both the scratch and handicap championships will take place on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June. Presentations will follow the golf on Sunday 26th June. Signing up sheets are on the notice boards. Please do sign up no later than Wednesday 22nd June. There will be no “on the day” entries.

The bad news this year is that the committee have decided in order to keep the entry fee for this competition within reasonable bounds, there will be no post event BBQ on the Sunday. This is a break with tradition but the cost of the BBQ outweighs the benefits. Any participating players who wish to dine after golf on Sunday 26th June should make their own arrangements directly with Trisha.

The good news is the entry fee will be reduced to £10 payable via the envelope system before play on Saturday 25th June.

PGA NATIONAL PRO-AM CHAMPIONSHIP: A MIXED event

Our qualifying event, open to ladies and gentlemen, will take place on Saturday 23rd July. To participate you must sign up in advance with the PGA and pay your entry fee direct to the PGA. Please follow the links in Bruce’s letter which you will find on the PRGC website.

DECEMBER UPDATE

COVID PROTOCOL

In view of the recent local surge in cases the Club will be enforcing a mandatory “mask wearing” protocol when moving about the clubhouse. Out of respect for all members please ensure you wear your mask when moving about the clubhouse.

CLUB KNOCK OUT COMPETITIONS 2021

These are still not all completed but we can add the following to the winners enclosure this year:

  • All Medal Winners Champion of Champions: Dave MacKenzie
  • Seniors Champion of Champions: Pete Smith
  • Summers Pairs KO: Brian Simms & Neil Terry
  • Seniors Singles KO: Andy Hall

Congratulations to all our winners.

THE CHILTERN BREAKFAST LEAGUE

The Divisional Winners trophy was presented to our team Captain Steve Sargeant at the AGM followed by individual presentations to all those members who played in the team in 2021. Alastair Wardrop and Barry Woledge also received their “player of the year” awards.

We halved our first-round winter KO match with Oakland Park 3 rubbers each but lost on the technicality of Oakland having better individual wins than us.

THE 2021 RYDERHEIM CUP and CAPTAINS DRIVE IN

This rather different team event took place on Sunday 07 November and what a fantastic day it was with some amazing highlights.

  • CAPTAINS DRIVE IN: I have been a member of PRGC since day one and there is no doubt about, our incoming Captain Al Bowyer delivered the finest “drive in” of any of his predecessors. Very long and very straight. So long in fact that the tally clerk (me) had to move a further 100 yards down the fairway to measure it. Not to be outdone, Bex Lowry drove off on behalf of the ladies, in support of the captain, and did the same. Two brilliant drives. The “drive in” came after the RyderHeim cup so maybe an 18-hole warm up works better for incoming Captains?
  • RyderHeim Cup: in the event 10 teams participated in a competition condensed to 9 holes of 4ball better ball and 9 holes of individual stableford. Our winners were the Sunday Strollers who managed to defend their trophy with an 8-point win over the The SODS on tour. Congratulations to Roger Meakes, Alan Nunn, Sean Cummins and Mark Tubb on their win.

Friday 24                              Christmas Eve Texas Scramble (teams of 4: SGS)

THE CHRISTMAS EVE TEXAS SCRAMBLE: THE BOB WILSON TROPHY

This is one of our most popular team events and this year will have added poignancy. The Committee has decided to dedicate this event to our late Head Greenkeeper Bob Wilson and member teams will be competing for the Bob Wilson trophy.

This is a Texas Scramble in teams of four and members guests are welcome. The event is played to Florida rules and the winning members team will receive the Bob Wilson Trophy plus the usual festive cheer. There will be a separate guests team prize and any team with 2 or more guests will compete for the guest prize.

The sign-up sheets will be posted in the bar so please sign up your team without delay as space is limited.  There will be no Friday stableford on this day as the course is closed for the shotgun start.

A MESSAGE FROM BRUCE LOOME PGA PROFESSIONAL

After a very busy, if somewhat different, year Bruce has now closed his golf coaching programme for 2021. He is heading to warmer climes for the winter and will spend time in Florida and, lucky him, have dinner with one of his coaching alumni, one Tiger Woods. Bruce will be practicing (yes even Pro’s need to do that) and warming up for a return to Europe in January when he will be playing in a couple of major tournaments in Portugal.  He aims to be back with us in February 2022, weather permitting, to recommence his on-field coaching.

Although in the USA Bruce tells me he is available via email if anyone wants to order Callaway kit or coaching vouchers, both of which make for excellent Christmas presents.

And finally, some members may not be aware of the excellent intensive coaching tour Bruce hosts in Poland every year. Many members have benefitted from this in the past so if you are interested for next year, please contact Bruce direct.

PROTOCOL REMINDERS

  • Winter Rules: Mark, pick, clean and place within 6 inches no nearer the hole, but only on the fairway and the mown surrounds of the green.
  • Trolley use: The club has notified all members that with immediate effect only trolleys with winter wheels will be allowed on the fairways. Hedgehog wheels are preferred but the power caddy winter tractor wheels are also acceptable. If you do not have winter wheels you must keep your trolley in the rough or on the paths provided. All club trolleys have hedgehog wheels and can be hired if needs be
  • Buggies: will remain in use whilst weather condition permit. Buggies are prohibited from the fairways and must also be kept in the rough or on the footpaths provided
  • Bunkers in development: if your ball lands in the sand it is in play. The newly laid turf is GUR and if your ball is on the new turf, you must take full relief away from the bunker. If your ball is in the sand but in such a position you would have to stand on the turf to play it you are permitted to move and place the ball IN THE SAND to a point where you are also standing in the sand. DO NOT play any shot with your feet on the newly laid turf. Bunkers in development will remain GUR until Spring 2022
  • Course management: if you observe any members or visitors not abiding by our course protocols, please politely raise it with them and /or inform the Club management as soon as possible so they can deal with the situation quickly and easily
  • Pitch Marks, Divots and Bunkers: Pease repair any pitch marks and divots you make or find on the course. Failure to repair these promptly will potentially ruin the game for players with you or following you and will result in long term damage to the course. Please repair them even if they are not yours and help playing partners who cannot do so for medical reasons. Always rake the bunker after use ready for the players behind you.
  • New 18th Tee: it has been noted that some members are moving the tee blocks on this tee to the left. This is forbidden. It alters the set course and makes any competition invalid under the rules of golf. Specifically, it makes the tee dangerous to those on the practice area or in the clubhouse area. Any member found moving these blocks will be subject to disciplinary action. You have been warned.
  • Brock Badger: he’s back so if your ball ends up in the badger scrapes you allowed full relief without penalty one club length for the edge of the disruption
  • Waste Bins: please use the waste bins around the course or better still take your rubbish home. Some members have been seen putting waste in the green bins. These are for seeded sand and should be used to repair the tees, and not for waste.
