NB The pond on hole 1 and between the red stakes and the pond on hole 1 are still a hazard as normal - this notice refers to the GUR notices just outside of this hazard area which require protection to help them recover.
To all members,
The area between the red stakes and the pond on Hole 1 remains a hazard area as normal. There is no change to the hazard line or how it is played.
Separately, the damaged ground outside the red stakes has been marked as Ground Under Repair – No Play Zone to protect the area while recovery work takes place.
Under the modern R&A Rules of Golf, a No Play Zone is defined as:
“A part of the course where the Committee prohibits play. Free relief must be taken from interference by a no play zone.” — R&A Rule 16.1f
Mandatory Relief
This GUR is a No Play Zone, you must take free relief under Rule 16.1. Playing the ball is not permitted. This is to protect the course and enable it to recover.
How to Take Relief (Rule 16.1b)
- Identify the nearest point of complete relief
- Drop within one club‑length
- Must not be nearer the hole
- Must remain in the same area of the course (general area stays in general area)See R&A Rule 16.1b
Why This Matters
This temporary No Play Zone:
- Protects damaged ground near the pond
- Prevents further deterioration which will occur if you play your ball as it lies within this area
- Supports greenkeeping recovery work
- Ensures fair and consistent play
