Princes Risborough Golf Club
Men’s Competition Update: August 2020
INTRODUCTION
Golf is well and truly up and running again at Princes Risborough Golf Club and boy are we grateful for that. We are by no means out of the woods yet with regard to Covid 19 so I make no apologies for once again repeating the essential Play Safe: Stay Safe mantra of Golf England. It is essential we all follow these guidelines no matter how tedious it may seem.
Mark has acquired the new “ball lifting” devices in each hole and these have a been a major improvement. Mark, Jake and John have been very busy on the course and the new 18th tee is really taking shape and we have a new “high water mark” with a rather large pond on the highest point on the course! When that comes into play in 2021 it will be another new challenge.
Gary and Sarah have made significant changes in the clubhouse with the bar now back in operation and the Perspex panels now have more of a permanent feel which I guess reflects the times we are living through. Trish is also back so we have food and beverage but all must be delivered in accordance with the governments Covid guidelines so patience is a must.
JULY COMPETITION RESULTS
Our competitions have restarted and we have seen significant participation from members throughout the club. A big thank you to all of you have taken part and competed even if like me you are sometimes nearer the back of the field than the top!! Our July winners are as follows:
- Seniors Medal: White tees: Winner: Craig Whitworth: Net 64
- Seniors Medal Yellow Tees: Winner: Alfonse Walser: Net 67 on count back from Pete Davies also Net 67
- Fowler Bowl: Winner: Jack Riley 40 points: runner up: Dennis Vinall 36 points.
- Club Monthly Stableford: Winner: Neil Terry 40 points. Runner up on count back: Graham Blackwell also on 40 points
- Grandads Cup: Winner: David Neighbour 41 points. Runner Up: Matt Watt 39 points on count back from Mark Tubb also on 39 points.
- Aspiring Grandads Cup: Winner: Craig Whitworth 42 points
- Rocking Horse Stable provider for 12 months: Winner: Doug Taylor 44 (38 points plus 6 grandchildren!!)
- The Spring Stableford: Winner: Craig Whitworth 45 points. Runner Up: Matt Watt 38 points on count back from Graham Blackwell also 38 points
It is clearly evident that our Club Captain, Craig Whitworth, is in a rich vein of form. The good news is that he has won three competitions in a little over one week. The bad news (for Craig) is a handicap cut of mega proportions. Well Played but he will never see his handicap of 12 ever again!! We must have some sympathy for Graham Blackwell who has managed to beat his handicap twice in the recent past but still not win. Better luck next time Graham.
A special mention for Jack Riley who has won his first ever golf competition with The Fowler Bowl. It is also a first mention in dispatches at Princes Risborough for Dennis Vinall and David Neighbour so well done to them both.
- Men’s Summer knock out matches: these matches have started and the draw sheets are on the web site. Winners are asked to email Barry at woledge@gmail.com with the match results. Barry will then arrange for the result to be loaded on the web site.

PROTOCOL REMINDERS
I have had to issue two reminders in the recent past so I make no apologies for repeating as follows:
- Card Completion: Cards must be marked by another member with a handicap. There is to be no swapping of cards and no self-marking. You make up and mark the card of your partner and vice versa
- Bunkers: all are in play and relief is to pick, clean and place within one club length within the bunker, no nearer the hole
- Hole and Holed: the ball must be at rest in the hole. Much easier with the new lifting devices
- Entry fees and prize money: these will be collected and disbursed in arrears
World handicapping system (WHS)
It appears likely that this new system will be introduced in the Autumn as planned. Members will be required to submit cards for ALL golf played and the system will compute a real time handicap from the average of the best 8 of the last 20 rounds recorded. We will be installing a computer terminal so all scores can be input directly by players before the cards go in the box. Covid protocol is proving a bit of a problem at this stage but we will keep you all advised of progress as we move to introduce the new global system.
Conclusion
Good luck to one and all. PLAY SAFE: STAY SAFE.
