What’s on in January

Christmas and New Year at Princes Risborough Golf Club

December was an entertaining month at Princes Risborough Golf Club!! The heavy rain, which has afflicted the south of the UK since early October, continued unabated with the result that we were moved to temporary greens and tees and even closed. Sitting on chalk, as we do, this is very unusual; so, is global warming even catching us out on occasions? Our greenkeeping crew of John and Jake have worked tirelessly to keep the course open and have succeeded where many other local clubs have failed. Well done to them and lets all keep our fingers crossed for better weather in the New Year.

That said, all our December competitions have taken place apart from the men’s medal which had to be deferred to the final weekend of the month: 27, 28 and 29 December. The big highlight for the men was, as ever, the TOFFS Christmas bash which saw a very full golf course and even fuller clubhouse for lunch, afternoon tea and carol singing. The ladies celebrated in their usual stylish manner and the whole club came together for the annual Christmas Eve Texas Scramble.

Christmas Eve Texas Scramble

This event was once again very well supported with 52 golfers playing in teams of four. The results were as follows:

The Terriers: an invitation team led by Neil Terry and including his wife Wendy and their friends Ann and Les. A net 58.7 secured the wine and the bragging right for 2019
Runners Up:
The Marks Brothers: Saul Spearing, John Hutton, Nick Worthington and Patrick Gunn, with a net 59.5, only just failed to repeat their win of last year. Hotel Chocolat for them. Both guest teams also receive a complimentary four ball from PRGC as part of their prize.

The Past Captains Pick: John Verrall, Dean Herritty, Richard Bennett and Ed Liddington secured 7 birdies and with a net 55.8 were clear winners on the day. Well played to them and this year they were able to walk off with the Champagne
Runners Up:
The Grumpy Lot: Pete Smith, John Forrest, Cliff Pearce and Richard Aldridge delivered a net 58.8 and with it the runners up spot. Useful “wet weather” equipment was their prize!!
Third Place:
The PRGC Mongrels: Neil Martin, Bob Darvill, Gavin Adams and Simon Lowry made up this, the international team of PRGC, making their first team appearance in a UK competition. A gross 62 was not sufficient to win on the day as with only 2.6 shots to play with the best that could be achieved was a net 59.4

Craig Whitworth organised a raffle on the day and those present raised in excess of £220 for the Charity pot so well done all round

We also took the opportunity to award Bob Darvill his trophy for winning the 2019 men’s scratch Knock Out and Richard Caldicott and Pete Major their trophies for winning the summer pairs.

The golf was followed by an excellent buffet lunch and many thanks to Nick (who also played golf!!) and the team for delivering a great day in the clubhouse and on the course.

Guest Winners

Member Winners (Ed has worked particularly hard this year on his 'moody' look - nice work)

Member Runners Up (Looking remarkably chirpy for "The Grumpies" - great to see Pete and John back in full swing and on the podium)

Member 3rd Place Team (and looking much happier than the winners)

New Years Eve Party

By popular request from members and frequent visitors to PRGC, we have laid on a "family friendly" - no admission after 9pm - New Year's Eve Party.
It's completely free but it will be guest list admission only. Please contact Nick to put your and your friend's names on the guest list.
