PRGC Ladies Section – October Newsletter

This is my twelfth and final newsletter – where has the last year gone I wonder?  In November I shall be handing over to Jill Peppett who has gallantly volunteered for a second year as Lady Captain.  I know that you will all join me in wishing Jill a very successful year.

Before I move on, however, I have news of three new lady members:  Anne Corcoran, Sue Pomeroy and Melinda Pooley. I’m sure it won’t be long before we see these ladies around the club so please keep your eyes open for them and give them a warm PRGC Ladies welcome.

Along with welcoming new members, sometimes we also have to say goodbye and so it is with Meg Bowen.  Meg has been a member of the club for many years and was Lady Captain herself at one time.  She has been a successful and stalwart member of our inter-club competitive team and she’s this year’s Club Ladies Champion.  Sadly we have to say goodbye to Meg this week as she is moving back home to the North of Scotland on Friday 6 October.  Meg – thank you for all your efforts on behalf of the Ladies Section.  We shall miss you but please don’t be a stranger.  When you’re visiting this area make sure you stop by at the club for a chat, and for a round of golf if you can – you will always be most welcome.

OCTOBER DIARY DATES
Mondays in October
Ladies Roll Up – the usual Monday arrangements will apply with ladies going out in arrival order, playing 9, 14 or 18 holes as mutually agreed.

Wednesday 4 and Saturday 7 October
October Medal - Qualifier
As always, off the reds on the Wednesday and off the yellows on the Saturday – please book your own tee time if you’re playing on Saturday, otherwise the sign-up sheet is on the noticeboard.
If you are playing the Wednesday 9 hole option, this is a Stableford off the reds – please remember to use the correct cards which are available in the sign-in book.

Wednesday 11 October
Ladies Inaugural Championship
This is an 18 hole, non-qualifying, Stableford competition, played off the red tees.  A sign-up sheet is on the noticeboard.

Tuesday 17 October
TOFFS Tuesday Bonus!
Another opportunity to enjoy a round of golf with the men of the club.  The TOFFS are running an event called The Tuesday Bonus and are inviting ladies to participate.  There will be golf in the morning followed by a buffet lunch.  It’s very generous of the TOFFS to invite the ladies to take part and I hope that plenty of us will be putting our names down on the sign-up sheet in the locker room.

Wednesday 18 OR Saturday 21 October
Autumn Stableford - Qualifier
Please remember this is off the reds on Wednesday and off the yellows on Saturday, and that you may only submit one card for this competition.  The sign-up sheet is on the board.

Sunday 22 October
Chiltern Breakfast League
The club is hosting the final event in The Chiltern Breakfast League season on Sunday 22 October.  To accommodate the event the course will be closed to non-participating players.  As this is a men’s event the ladies locker room will also be used by men for the day.

Wednesday 25 October
Informal Golf Competition
Watch out for news of this event which will be posted on the noticeboards in due course.

Friday 27 October
Ladies Presentation Evening
The Ladies Presentation Evening is one of the highlights of our annual calendar.  An opportunity to talk about matches won, and lost, of great shots and of near misses, and so much more.  This year’s event will take place at the clubhouse on Friday 27 October.  Our social secretaries, Chris Hallett and Anne Ward, will be posting full information on the noticeboards this week so please take a moment to check the details and choose your menu.

OTHER NEWS
Chiltern League
All matches in The Chiltern League have now been played.  Our ladies finished joint second in their division.  A great effort on which they should be congratulated.  The final leg of this activity is a Ryder Cup event which will take place at Weston Turville Golf Club on Friday 13 October when eight of our ladies will be competing.  I’m very proud of the achievement of this group and hope that there will be good news to report from the Ryder Cup!

Coaching Opportunities
As I write three of our ladies are on a coaching trip to Poland with our excellent professional, Bruce Loome, but you don’t have to go so far afield to benefit from his skills.  As well as one-to-one lessons, Bruce is also offering a further series to revise your short game.  Sessions are scheduled for:
·        Monday 16 October 0900-1000 Chipping
·        Monday 23 October 0900-1000 Pitching
·        Monday 30 October 0900-1000 Bunker Shots
Sign-up sheets have been posted in the Ladies Locker Room.  Places are limited so don’t delay if you are interested.

Finally, the last word must go to you, ladies.  As is custom and practice I chose a charity for us to support during my year and it was Thames Valley Air Ambulance.  I don’t know yet how much you have helped me to raise for this amazing organisation, but I do know that you’ve been beyond generous, and for that many thanks.

And my thanks must also go to you all for your encouragement and support throughout my term as Lady Captain.  During the year I’ve put golf and communications at the core of what goes on in the ladies section.  Even if the weather hasn’t always co-operated, I hope that you feel you’ve known what was going on and when, and I hope that you’ve all thoroughly enjoyed your golf, at home and away.  Long may that continue.

Warmest regards
Sue
