The calendar tells me that it’s August but the weather makes me think of November.  It’s confusing and disappointing in equal measures, but hopefully the sun will soon start shining again and we will be able to enjoy the full programme of events that we have ahead of us this month.

Mondays in August Ladies Roll Up

The usual Monday arrangements will apply with ladies going out in arrival order, playing 9, 14 or 18 holes as mutually agreed.   Monday 28 August is a bank holiday so if you plan to play that day please remember to book a tee time.

Wednesday 9 August

The Sullivan Cup – re-arranged from 26 July due to atrocious weather!

This is a Stableford Pairs Competition.  It’s a non-qualifier off full handicap from the red tees.  A very sociable morning so I hope you will choose to take part.  Our Competition Secretary, Jacqui, has already notified those who are playing details of tee times and partners.  As this is a pairs competition, if you find yourself unable to take part please let Jacqui know as soon as possible.  We have one player in reserve if needs be.

This event replaces The Spoons – due to pressure on our calendar following weather-related cancellations, we will not be playing The Spoons this year – sorry for any disappointment.

Saturday 12 and Wednesday 16 August

The August Medal - Qualifier

As always, off the yellows on the Saturday – please book your own tee time – and off the reds on the Wednesday.  Sign-up sheet is on the noticeboard.

If you are playing the 9 hole option, this is a Stableford off the reds – please remember to use the correct cards which have been provided by our Handicap Secretary, Jill, and are available in the sign-in book.

Wednesday 23 August

The Wishlade Trophy re-arranged from 17 May due to atrocious weather – again!

This competition, generously sponsored by Lynn, is for ladies with handicaps 30-36.  The format for the day’s play is a qualifying 18 hole Stableford game on full handicap off the reds.  A 9-hole option is available for those eligible.  Please sign-up on the list on the noticeboard and you will be allocated a tee time.  Other ladies with lower handicaps are asked to delay going out until after the Wishlade competitors have tee’d off.

Wednesday 30 August

The Grannies Cup

You can tell by the name who is eligible to play in this competition.  It’s a qualifying 18 hole strokeplay competition.  Please sign up on the board if you wish to play.

Club Competitions

Three of this year’s knockout competitions have now been completed.  The Winter Pairs was won by Meg Bowen and Chris Hallett, the Summer Pairs by Jill Peppett and Joan Ramsey and the Singles by Jean Caldicott.  Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to everyone who took part in these enjoyable competitions.  The final of the Hutley Cup is yet to be played.

League Matches

The last league match of the season is scheduled at home against Chiltern Forest on Thursday 14 September.

Summer Madness

Back in June the club had hoped to stage a Midsummer Madness Cross Country competition.  Unfortunately this had to be rescheduled due to other commitments and will now be held over until June 2018.

Lady Captain’s Away Day

As is the custom there will be a Lady Captain’s Away Day in the autumn.  This will take place at Studley Wood Golf Course on Tuesday 3 October.  Please make a note in your diary – more information will follow.

Coaching Opportunities

As a club we are fortunate to benefit from the skills and experience of an excellent professional, Bruce Loome.  In the coming months Bruce will be offering several coaching opportunities:

  • Each year Bruce offers the men the opportunity to enjoy a few days away to experience fantastic golf in lovely weather and also to work on their golf game with intensive daily coaching.  This year Bruce is offering to organise a similar trip for ladies, perhaps in Spain or Portugal, or even Poland!  If you are interested in this possibility, please speak direct with Bruce as soon as possible.
  • If a holiday away is not for you, then Bruce will also be running a series of one hour sessions at PRGC.  These will be a revision of earlier lessons looking at the short game and getting out of those dreadful sandpits.  The lessons will be for an hour on Monday mornings, probably in October, and will be limited to six ladies.  We’ve already got three names lined up – if you are interested please let me know as soon as possible and I will work with Bruce to establish a schedule.
  • Get Golf Ready In Six - this programme is designed for beginners and those returning to golf - everything you'll need to know to step onto a golf course and get out to play with confidence.  If you know of anyone who would be interested, please do encourage them to contact Bruce.  The next course will start on 21 August.

Happy golfing ladies!
