Barry’s Newletter … “What’s on in February”

PRGC Members Report
February 2020

As anticipated January has been a quiet month on the golf course. As of this writing the Seniors Stableford and Club Stableford were both played on the scheduled dates which is an achievement given the deluge of rain we have been experiencing since October 2019. The third week of January has dawned clear and cold so maybe the weather has turned and the course will get a chance to dry out.

We continue to have water retention issues with the third and fourth greens which for some time have been too soft for the greenkeeping team to get any machinery on to cut and treat them. This has led to the unusually extended use of temporary greens on these two holes. The Club is on the case for a permanent solution to avoid this water retention in future but that can’t happen until the Spring. Let’s hope the rain has abated for an extended period.

Men’s Winter Eclectic

This competition is up and running with some good scores being submitted despite the inclement weather. There is still plenty of time to play in this competition which is based on submitting 10 designated cards over the winter period. Due to the poor weather we have decided to extend the closing date to 30th April so even more time to get the cards in. If you have not yet signed up, please do so, put your £5 in the eclectic box and get on and play in this our premier winter event. There is money to be won!!

Annual Handicap Review

I chaired a meeting of the handicap committee last week and we completed the annual review of all members handicaps. This is a process where our system database identifies those members who have played consistently on, above or below their handicap in qualifying competitions over the previous 12 months. From this, an algorithm recommends those members who should have a handicap adjustment up or down. For the majority of members there is no change but for some there is a change.

We have actioned the recommended changes and the affected members have been informed of their new handicap which is effective immediately. All members handicaps are posted on the notice board so please make sure you check your handicap before you play.

Global Handicapping System

This new system is now slated to be introduced in the United Kingdom with effect from 01 November 2020. In part this new system will provide for the real time adjustment of handicaps utilizing the best 8 of the last 10 cards played. To achieve this, we will be introducing a computer terminal in to the clubhouse, where all members will be required to directly input their scores in to the system on completion of their round. We will still require the properly completed and signed card to be placed in the box for verification by the handicap secretary.

Our plan is to have the computer terminal up and running from 01 April so all can get used to the new system before it goes live nationally on 01 November. The Club is securing a grant from England Golf to help pay for the equipment which is bespoke and cannot be generally sourced.

We will be providing full details on the new handicapping system in due course.

Slope System of Course Measurement

This is another major change which ironically is designed to bring the UK in to line with Europe!! Timing for introduction of this universal system is still in doubt so we will keep you informed as best we can. Suffice to say, PRGC was assessed several years ago: so long ago in fact that we have changed our course since with the new men’s white tee on hole 14. Hey ho!!
